Welcome to Mechele’s Shelf Care
Each month, we choose one book, sometimes it’s inspiring, sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s just what we need to feel seen. We’ll share why we picked it, what to look out for, and how to join the chat (even if you’re reading it in your robe at midnight).
The Secret to Hummingbird Cake
by Celeste Fletcher McHale (Author)
There’s something about The Secret to Hummingbird Cake that just pulls at my heart. Maybe it’s the Southern charm, the deep bond between lifelong friends, or the way it reminds us that laughter, grief, and cake often show up in the same season. I’m excited to read this one because I know it’s going to make me feel something—and I’m ready for that. I’m ready for a story that honors friendship, the messiness of life, and the sweetness that can still rise out of the hardest moments. I have a feeling this book will sit with me long after the last page—and that’s exactly the kind of story I love.

Hi, I’m Mechele – your go-to book lover here at The Empty Nest Mom!
I’m so excited to share book suggestions and reviews with our community of Moms. Most of the books I dive into are audiobooks—thanks to my 90-minute commute (yes, each way!). So in addition to the storyline, I’ll also give you the scoop on the narration and whether the voice brought the characters to life—or put me to sleep.
I love a good mix of reads—biographies that inspire, thrillers that keep me guessing, and yes… romance. Rom-coms are my soft spot. And before you ask how a realist like me can be a sucker for love stories—I’ll just say this: I still believe there’s a little magic left in the world, and some lucky souls find it.
In my reviews, I’ll do my best to steer clear of spoilers so you can experience every twist, laugh, and tear for yourself. Whether you’re listening on the go, curled up with a cup of tea, I hope my reviews help you pick your next escape.
So, fellow Moms—grab your earbuds, your blanket and tea (or tequila, no judgment here), and bookmark this moment. My reviews start now. . . .
Here’s the plot twist: this book wasn’t what I expected. Let’s talk.
I had a friend send me this book a few years ago. I had gotten a few chapters in and then set it aside because life got in the way. Recently we had a cool spring rain all weekend so I curled up with my favorite throw and settled in for a little R&R (reading and relaxation).
Let’s dive in! However, fair warning… the water is pretty shallow.
The book is a part of a series. This is the only book in the series that I have read but learned quickly that Ellison, the main character, has a knack for finding dead bodies. To say this is a suspenseful murder mystery would far overstep the writing. The book was a quick read. That was largely due to the elementary writing of the story.
There are two things going on in the story. One is preparation for a wedding. The other is a murder investigation.
The wedding preparations and subsequent marriage were endearing. There is some humor woven into the events preparing for the wedding. The relationship between the main characters fell into my love of rom-coms. This part of the story line was enjoyable but not strong enough to carry the entire book.
The murder investigation is where the book fails for me. The number of dead bodies found by Ellison borders on absurd. There are not enough clues presented for you to try and solve the murders yourself. Combine that with the number of characters that have an ever-brief moment in the story, and it falls flat.
There won’t be any more Country Club Murder books that fall onto our reading list.

Mechele says:
“Not every book is a five-star read—but that’s the fun of a book club, right? We all bring different tastes to the table. If you’re curious, here’s the link to check it out for yourself. Who knows? You might love what didn’t land for me.”
