I Finally Know Why Some Houses Had the Good Candy

For years, Halloween was mine to run.

The parties. The costumes. The candy. The chaos.

Then one year, nobody needed a costume anymore.

And then I had to figure out what Halloween looks like when the kids are grown and gone.

The Halloween Years

If you raised kids, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

The costume they swore they wanted in September, and changed their mind about the week of.

The last minute run to the store because somebody needed face paint. Right now.

The candy bag so full they could barely drag it up the driveway. Sometimes it was a real trick-or-treat bag. Sometimes it was a Walmart sack. Especially for the friend who tagged along at the last minute just for fun.

And the candy trade on the living room floor afterward. Serious business. Better negotiating than any boardroom I’ve ever been in.

It was loud. It was messy. Somebody always cried.

I’d give a lot to do one more of those nights.

Then They Grew Up

Nobody tells you about the first empty nest Halloween.

You buy a bag of candy out of habit. You turn the porch light on. And you sit there wondering who you’re even doing this for.

It’s a small thing. But it hits.

That’s the empty nest. It’s not one big goodbye. It’s a hundred little ones, one holiday at a time.

Then Came the Mimi Era

And then the grandkids showed up and changed everything.

But Halloween belongs to them now. My grandkids and their parents.

I still get to see them in their tiny costumes and hang out for a bit. But it’s legitimately their time now, with their mom and dad, making their own memories.

That’s exactly how it should be. I had my turn.

And the best part?

I get to skip some of the drama. The costume that itches. The sugar crash. The meltdown at the third house. That’s theirs now.

Empty Nest Halloween Ideas

If this is your first quiet Halloween, here are a few ways to make it yours.

  • Be the house. Go all out on the porch. Kids remember the house with the good candy forever.
  • Hand out the full size bars. You’re not feeding a family of five anymore. Splurge.
  • Throw a girls’ Halloween night. Costumes optional. Wine encouraged. Scary movie mandatory.
  • Dress up anyway. Who says costumes are just for kids? Answer the door in character.
  • Go to the grandkids’ trunk or treat. Or a niece’s, a neighbor’s, a friend’s. Be the bonus grandma.
  • Buy the candy YOU like. For once in your life, nobody’s going to steal your Reese’s.
  • Take a fall day trip. Pumpkin patch, corn maze, apple orchard. You don’t need kids to go.

You Don’t Even Have to Be Home

Here’s your permission slip.

You don’t have to sit by the door all night. If you want some me time, take it.

That’s exactly what I did last year.

I set a big bowl of candy out on the front porch and went and did my own thing.

And honestly? I was surprised. When I got home there was still some candy left. Not much. But some.

The best part was watching every single one of those faces on my Ring doorbell. The princesses. The superheroes. The little ones who could barely reach the bowl.

They were so excited.

Even the ones who took a few extra pieces. I saw you. I didn’t mind one bit.

So turn the porch light off, leave the bowl, and go have your night. The magic still happens.

My Candy Bowl Rule

Here’s my one Halloween rule now.

Whatever’s left in the bowl at the end of the night is mine.

I don’t have to share it. I don’t have to hide it. I don’t have to split it evenly between anybody.

And now I finally get it.

You know those houses that always had the good candy? The full size bars. The fancy stuff.

Empty nesters. Every one of them.

And they were eating the leftovers. Ha!

I did my time. Empty nest perk.

One More Thing

Enjoy Halloween while it lasts, Friends.

Because on November 1st, Mrs. Claus clocks in.

The pumpkins come down, the red velvet comes out, and the Real Boss of the North Pole is back to work. Stay tuned…….
